About us

As a Christian organisation, we are moved by the heart breaking circumstances of abandoned children in Uganda. We maintain christian values and want to create a safe place where these children can grow up surrounded by love, support and security. Nafasi Welfare Centre is a small scale project that offers temporary crisis care to 12-20 babies and young children aged 0 – 5 years of age who are in urgent need of care and a home. Our goal is to find a warm and safe permanent family home for the children within eight months of their admission to Nafasi Welfare Centre.

Mother Teresa once said,“If you cannot help one hundred people, help just one!”

“We dare to take up the challenge of finding a home for every child as quickly as possible.”

Uganda has two million orphans – the highest percentage of orphans of any country in the world. There are many reasons for a child becoming an orphan or being abandoned. Each child and every parent has his or her own story. Sometimes the situation is hopeless and irreversible, but sometimes children can be reunited with their parents or other members of their families.

The most common reasons why children to lose their parents or are abandoned are:

  • Parents die from HIV/AIDS – 1.2 million children in Uganda were orphaned by the HIV/AIDS epidemic in 2009.
  • Many Ugandans live below the poverty line and cannot manage to support their children –the average number of births per female being seven, one of the highest birth rates in the world (3.57% in 2011).
  • The families of teenage mothers do not readily accept an illegitimate child, thereby forcing them to keep the birth a secret.
  • Children from a previous marriage may not be accepted by the mother’s new husband.
  • Many children are born as a result of rape or incest and such children are considered to be a disgrace by the family and the community.
  • Parents do not always have the means to care for children who have a disability or a serious illness.
  • Parents are in prison.

Vrolijke meid Nafasi Welfare Centre is dedicated to changing the fate of such children by doing all that is possible to provide them with a safe family home environment.

   We dare to care!

Will you dare to join us in taking up this challenge?

Nafasi means “the chance of having a home”.

That’s exactly what all orphans deserve:
a safe “home” in the care of a loving family!
